Leopardus is a genus of small spotted wild cats native to the Americas. The word is derived from the Latin leopardus, which comes from the Greek leō(n) (lion) and pardos (panther or spotted cat). This name reflects the ancient, incorrect belief that the leopard was a hybrid of a lion and a panther.
